Empowering Survivors: UN Women and French Embassy Host Event on Gender-Based Violence Shelters in Tajikistan

in Society / Tajikistan - by

On March 29, 2024, UN Women and the French Embassy in Tajikistan organized an event centered on protecting survivors of gender-based violence through shelters. The objective was to raise awareness among state authorities, the private sector, development partners, and key stakeholders about the work and achievements of shelters in Tajikistan.

The event gathered over 60 participants and included a panel discussion with four shelter directors, addressing issues, best practices, and lessons learned in the field. Key challenges highlighted were insufficient funding, lack of experienced psychologists sensitive to gender issues, and ensuring safety and protection for shelter staff and residents.

The event aimed to strengthen partnerships between shelters and organizations to contribute to a comprehensive and effective response to gender-based violence. By combining diverse experiences, resources, and perspectives, these partnerships can significantly enhance efforts to raise awareness, provide support, and prevent further violence.

Ms. Parvati Ramaswami, the UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan, emphasized the importance of collective partnership and cooperation in protecting and supporting survivors of gender-based violence to achieve gender equality and expand rights and opportunities.

The French Ambassador, Ms. Elsa Pinol, acknowledged the longstanding issue of domestic violence in France and highlighted the ongoing efforts to address it through legal and concrete measures. She stressed the importance of continuous monitoring and concerted actions to combat gender-based violence.

Mr. Peter Riley, Head of the USAID mission in Tajikistan, underscored that the protection of women and girls is not only a human rights issue but also a strategic necessity with wide-ranging positive impacts on society. Gender-based violence requires urgent attention and coordinated efforts across all levels of society.

The event also aimed to identify strategies for further progress in this crucial area. The UN Women project "Preventing and Responding to Gender-Based Violence in Tajikistan," supported by the INL Bureau of the US Department of State, seeks to improve services for survivors of gender-based violence, including through shelters.

Various organizations, such as "Gamkhori" and "Korvoni Umed," highlighted the vital role of NGOs in implementing initiatives to combat aggression and stereotypes towards vulnerable groups in society. They shared statistics on the assistance provided to survivors and the impact of their work in sheltering women, adolescents, and children.

The event emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of shelter staff and at-risk individuals, particularly those with HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis. The impact of kindness and care was also highlighted, showing that even small gestures can significantly improve a person's life.

The UN Women structure has been working in Tajikistan since 1999 to promote gender equality, expand women's rights and opportunities, and support the country's efforts in these areas. By aligning with national development priorities, UN Women in Tajikistan focuses on advancing gender equality, ending violence against women, promoting peace and security, and enhancing humanitarian activities.
