Representatives of the Tajikistan Prosecutor's Office have requested parents whose children attend schools and kindergartens not to allow their children to participate in "idgardak." Some educational institutions have even taken written statements from parents regarding this matter, as reported by the parents themselves.
One parent of a student at a prestigious gifted children's lyceum in the capital city reported that prosecutors asked them not to leave their children unattended during Eid al-Fitr and not to allow them to participate in idgardak.
Another parent of a student at School No. 60 in the capital city mentioned that a teacher spoke to them and obtained a written statement to ensure that the child is not left unattended on the holiday.
According to the parents, the term "idgardak" was not specifically mentioned in the signed statements, but the content revolved around ensuring children are supervised during the celebrations.
Other parents also confirmed that they were warned during a meeting at a kindergarten not to let their child participate in idgardak.
The purpose of these meetings and warnings regarding participation in this traditional children's ritual was not explained by the Prosecutor's Office. Attempts to obtain information from the office were unsuccessful.
However, the Department of Education and Science of Dushanbe denied holding any meetings or issuing warnings about idgardak, stating that they had not received any complaints or requests regarding this matter.
During the holidays of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, children typically visit the homes of relatives and neighbors in the morning to exchange greetings and receive gifts.
Religious authorities in Tajikistan expressed their disapproval of the idgardak tradition for the first time in 2017, citing concerns about children's safety due to unfamiliar locations and potential dangers.
