Improving Tourism in Central Asia: Initiatives in Uzbekistan and Challenges in Tajikistan

in Society / Tajikistan - by

In recent years, the Central Asian region has been attracting more and more foreign tourists. Each country in Central Asia strives to offer unique experiences to visitors, significantly increasing tourist influx. Recently, Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev unveiled plans to develop tourism in the Khorezm region. Special visas allowing unrestricted visits throughout the year will be introduced for tourists there. Additionally, millions of dollars will be allocated to reduce airfare costs to Urgench and other cities in the region, with entrepreneurs receiving preferential loans for hotel and resort construction.

The Pamir region is undeniably one of Tajikistan's main tourist attractions, potentially bringing significant revenue to the country. However, accessing this region is notably challenging. Besides its remoteness, foreign visitors require special permits to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region due to its border status. Opinions on these permits vary among experts, with some suggesting that they do not bring significant benefits, while others argue for their necessity in ensuring tourist safety. Nonetheless, all industry specialists agree on the need to eliminate existing barriers hindering tourism development in the Pamirs.

Interestingly, Tajikistan's most attractive region for tourists remains difficult to visit not only due to permit requirements but also because the only way to reach Badakhshan today is by car. The arduous and hazardous 12-15-hour journey through dangerous mountain serpentine roads poses a challenge for many. There are no trains or flights to Badakhshan, as air travel to the GBAO was halted in 2017 due to financial and technical difficulties. Talks are ongoing to acquire a suitable aircraft with an economical engine for this route.

To attract more tourists, Tajikistan must address issues such as limited air travel connectivity and costly flights, which negatively impact the country's tourism image compared to its more accessible and affordable neighboring countries. Improving internet services for travelers is also crucial. Tajikistan currently ranks poorly in terms of mobile internet speed and cost, lagging behind neighboring countries.

Before visiting a new country, tourists typically research extensively online for detailed information and reviews. However, information about Tajikistan and its tourism potential is scarce online, especially in English and other languages. Inadequate and ineffective tourism advertising is a significant factor hindering tourism development in any country. To increase interest in Tajikistan among potential tourists, it is vital to regularly disseminate engaging and relevant information on international platforms, engage with popular booking services, advertise and promote the country in various rankings and lists, and collaborate with bloggers and journalists. Additionally, tourists often create compelling content about countries they enjoy, such as videos, articles, and photos, underscoring the importance of fast and accessible internet.
