The 17th open international chess tournament "Memorial of Georgy Agzamov" was held in Tashkent, dedicated to the memory of Uzbekistan's first grandmaster, with Turkmen chess players participating. According to the online publication Asmannews, a total of 247 chess players from 18 countries took part in the competition, competing in groups "A" and "B" using the Swiss system over 10 rounds. Turkmenistan was represented by two athletes in the strongest group "A" - International Master Saparmurat Atabaev and FIDE Master Jemal Ovezdurdyeva.
Saparmurat finished 10th overall, earning 6.5 points. The athlete was just 0.5 points short of achieving the title of International Grandmaster. Jemal secured the 27th spot overall with 5.5 points. The Turkmen sportswoman became the top female player, surpassing her opponents from Uzbekistan.
