Authorities in Uzbekistan Arrest Deputy Governor and Transport Official for Corruption

The State Security Service and the Department for Combating Economic Crimes under the General Prosecutor's Office of Uzbekistan have detained the deputy governor and the head of the transport department, as reported by the SGB press service.

According to the agency, the deputy governor of the Kukdalin district in the Kashkadarya region demanded $5,000 in exchange for appointing a private company as a supplier of film products to local farmers under the "Every Family is an Entrepreneur" program. He was apprehended while receiving 15 million sum out of the requested amount, having already received 10 million sum earlier for his assistance.

The SGB noted that he had previously been convicted under Article 167 of the Criminal Code for embezzlement.

Furthermore, law enforcement agencies also arrested the head of a company engaged in passenger transportation in Andijan. He allegedly promised a citizen, through his influential acquaintances, to establish a company in the citizen's name and secure a tender victory for paid passenger transportation services on the "Eski shahar - Altynkul" route. He purportedly demanded $7,500 for this scheme and was detained while receiving the sum.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that the acting head of the Transport Department in the Andijan region was involved in this case and subsequently apprehended him. It is noted that he also had a prior criminal record.
