Systematic Corruption Unveiled in Kazakh Education Sector, 229 Criminal Cases Reported

Daniyar Bigaidarov, the official representative of the Anti-Corruption Agency, announced during a briefing on June 19th that the agency has uncovered systematic corruption violations in the field of education. According to Bigaidarov, efforts are ongoing to prevent systemic corruption in the education sector. Since the beginning of 2023, a total of 229 criminal cases have been registered in this field, with damages amounting to over 15 billion tenge. The largest embezzlements have been identified in the regions of Zhetysu, Turkestan, Kyzylorda, Almaty, and Aktobe. A total of 317 individuals have been implicated in the crimes, out of which 144 have been convicted and sentenced to various penalties. Bigaidarov revealed that the anti-corruption service in the Aktobe region is investigating a criminal case involving the head of the education department in Shalkar district. "He is suspected of receiving bribes totaling 18.5 million tenge through the school director from the heads of subordinate organizations in exchange for general patronage in service. With the court's approval, the head of the education department and the school director have been remanded in custody," added the Anti-Corruption representative. On March 15, 2024, the Anti-Corruption Service announced the launch of pilot projects involving the "money coloring" process in the utilization of budget funds using digital tenge.
