Corruption Cases in Kazakhstan: Sentences Handed Down for Fraud and Bribery

In Astana and Kostanay, sentences have been handed down in cases of fraud. The details were revealed on May 29, 2024, by the Anti-Corruption Agency of Kazakhstan.

The former director of the representations of LLP "Astyk koymalary" "Bread base No. 2 and No. 5" Zhusupov M. has been sentenced by the Specialized Inter-District Court for Criminal Cases in Astana to eight years and six months of imprisonment.

Furthermore, Barabash I. and Demesinov T. have been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment each for instigating bribery and attempted fraud.

Meanwhile, in the court No. 2 of Kostanay, a verdict was announced regarding the lawyer of the Kostanay Bar Association, Brantsev O.V. He has been fined an amount equal to 20 times the bribe, which amounts to 12 million tenge, with a lifelong ban on holding positions in public service.

The agency specified that the sentences have not yet come into legal force.

"Bribe-givers and intermediaries in bribery, along with bribe-takers, are deprived of the opportunity for early conditional release. Giving a bribe is punishable by up to 15 years of imprisonment, as well as confiscation of property, lifelong prohibition on holding certain positions, deprivation of military ranks, class ranks, state awards... Exemption from criminal liability for giving a bribe is only possible if the citizen voluntarily reports to law enforcement or if extortion was involved. In all other cases, the bribe-giver faces criminal punishment," as reminded by the Anti-Corruption Agency.

Individuals who report instances of corruption or otherwise assist in combating corruption are eligible for a one-time monetary reward.

Earlier, it was reported that the Anti-Corruption Service of Kazakhstan had completed an investigation into the Chairman of the Fire Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as the heads of the Department of Emergency Situations of Shymkent and Zhetysu Region.
