Customs Service Threatens Legal Action Against Journalist for Misinformation Accusations

in Corruption / Kyrgyzstan - by

The Customs Service is threatening to sue journalist Ydyrys Isakov if he does not publish a refutation of his information about the agency's work. The material in question is titled "Kazynany kakshatkan zhyrtyk". The customs press service notes that before publishing the investigation, Ydyrys Isakov should have clarified the information and carefully understood the situation being covered.

In a video material, Ydyrys Isakov talks about the situation of importing timber from Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan through the Ak-Tilek checkpoint, repeatedly mentioning corrupt actions in the Customs Service at this checkpoint. He demands order in the agency's activities. Despite interviewing employees of other supervisory bodies, he continues to accuse the Customs Service. Such actions suggest that the independent journalist deliberately works to discredit the agency in the eyes of the public or the observer does not understand the specifics of the activities of government bodies. This raises the question of how competent Ydyrys Isakov is in conducting an "investigation" and publishing this type of information.

The agency has pointed out that when it comes to informing the public, the chosen topic should be thoroughly researched by the author, especially when covering the activities of government bodies, it is necessary to familiarize oneself with at least the basic regulatory legal acts regulating the activities of the state body.

"In the case of Isakov, this did not happen, reflecting his unprofessionalism. The journalist has already published video material regarding the situation on the Kyrgyz-Kazakh section of the state border, where accusations against the Customs Service were also voiced," emphasized in the Customs Service.

The Customs Service reminded that Kyrgyzstan joined the Eurasian Economic Union agreement on August 12, 2015. Within the framework of the customs union of EAEU member states, there is free movement of goods between the territories of member states without customs declaration and state control. In other words, there has been no customs control on the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border for nine years.
