The Mirabad District Criminal Court issued a verdict on March 25 in a closed session regarding a 67-year-old music teacher accused of attempting to rape a student. The press service of the Tashkent city courts reported the outcome.
In August 2023, the anti-violence project in Uzbekistan, Nemolchi.uz, highlighted Alexander Sultanov, a music teacher from Tashkent, who tried to rape a 12-year-old student during private lessons at his home. Following the publication, a criminal case was initiated under Part 4 of Article 119 of the Criminal Code (violent satisfaction of sexual needs in an unnatural form with a person under 14 years old).
After the publication on Nemolchi.uz, a former student of the accused teacher came forward, revealing that the teacher had molested her when she was a child. She also noted that this was not an isolated incident of the teacher's inappropriate behavior towards students.
The court found the defendant guilty under Part 4 of Article 119 of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to 8 years in a general regime colony. The press service of the children's ombudsman clarified to "Gazeta.uz" that the prosecutor requested a 13-year prison term, but the court took into account the defendant's age.
The project notes that due to amendments in legislation on the protection of women and children from violence, the convicted individual will not be eligible for sentence reduction.
