President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Namangan region to review the modernization project of Namangan International Airport. The president emphasized the importance of improving the airport infrastructure to boost business, transportation services, and tourism. He highlighted the need to increase the number of local and international flights and ensure ticket affordability.

During a meeting in Namangan, it was noted that industrial and agricultural products from the region are currently exported through Tashkent or Andijan, leading to increased costs. The passenger terminal's capacity is set to be expanded to 1000 people per hour. Last September, a reconstructed arrival terminal was opened at the airport, increasing the passenger service area from 720 to 1756 sq. m.

The project includes the construction of a cargo terminal, catering and refueling complexes, and other facilities to enhance the region's business, export, and transit potential. The plan also involves updating the fleet of special equipment to accommodate and service aircraft of all types.

President Mirziyoyev stressed the importance of enhancing the airport's capabilities to handle more flights. As part of the development strategy for Uzbekistan's airports until 2035, two scenarios were presented for the airports in the Fergana Valley. One scenario involved the reconstruction of existing airports, while the other proposed creating a unified airport for the valley to replace three "underutilized" international airports.

The recent opening of the Kokand airport, with regional status, marks another milestone in the region. The airport, closed to civilian aircraft since 2001, is set to commence full operations from April 1st. The existing airports in the Fergana Valley have limitations, including single-sided landing approaches and restricted runway capacity, posing challenges for air traffic.

The ongoing efforts to modernize and expand Uzbekistan's airports aim to enhance connectivity, boost economic growth, and promote tourism in the region.
