Uzbekistan to Host 150th Anniversary Session of Inter-Parliamentary Union in April 2025

Uzbekistan is set to host the 150th anniversary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in April 2025. The agreement was signed on March 27 in Geneva, Switzerland, during the 148th session of the assembly by IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong and the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, Tanzila Narbayeva, as reported by the Senate's press service. The signing ceremony was attended by the IPU President, Tulia Ekson.

The IPU Assembly is the highest body of the IPU, which brings together 180 parliaments from around the world. This significant parliamentary event will be held in Central Asia for the first time. The initiative to host the IPU session in Uzbekistan was put forward by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

According to Tanzila Narbayeva, the Chairperson of the Senate, hosting the anniversary session in Uzbekistan is a recognition of the democratic reforms and parliamentary development in the country. She highlighted Uzbekistan's active participation in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, promoting human rights and gender equality at the parliamentary level, engaging youth in legislative activities through the Youth Parliament, and modernizing the country's legal framework in line with international standards.

During the IPU Assembly session, there will be an exchange of experiences among parliaments on current international agenda items, discussions on parliamentary cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, cooperation in the field of human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, and climate change mitigation. Tanzila Narbayeva emphasized the role of parliamentarians in contributing to global peace and stability through parliamentary diplomacy and actively defending the rights of vulnerable population groups.

Previously, Uzbekistan hosted the International Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable Development Goals in Bukhara and the 14th Summit of Women Parliament Leaders of IPU Member States in Tashkent.
