The Minister of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan, Sherzod Shermatov, commented on the coverage of schools with internet and computers. According to experts from the Institute of Macroeconomic and Regional Studies (IMRS), the ratio of computers to students in Uzbekistan is significantly lower compared to other countries. For example, in Kazakhstan, there are 0.72 computers per student, while in Uzbekistan, the number is only 0.03 per student, and in rural areas, it is 0.04.
Sherzod Shermatov mentioned that in 2021, nearly all schools in Uzbekistan were provided with fiber-optic and radio relay connections for internet access, following the president's directive. However, the issue of computer availability remains. Previously, schools faced challenges in allocating funds for computer purchases, but now, funds are allocated annually from the budget as per the president's instructions.
Shermatov acknowledged that the allocated funds for this purpose are currently limited due to the size of the budget, impacted by the significant shadow economy in Uzbekistan. He emphasized the importance of increasing budget revenues to allocate more resources for equipping schools with computers.
The Minister also urged considering the GDP per capita in other countries when comparing internet and computer coverage in schools. He highlighted that Uzbekistan's GDP per capita is significantly lower compared to these countries, and the country aims to double this figure by 2030 as per the Development Strategy.
In 2023, 220 billion soms were allocated from the budget for updating computer classes. Sherzod Shermatov expressed optimism that with the growth of budget revenues, more funds will be directed towards enhancing schools with computers. The efforts to bridge the digital divide in Uzbekistan's education system are seen as crucial for the country's future development.
