Former Mayor of Andijan City, Bahrom Khaidarov, Dies in Custody

Former mayor of Andijan city, Bahrom Khaidarov, who was serving a 10-year prison sentence since late 2022, has passed away. This information was confirmed by the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office of Uzbekistan.

According to the agency, Bahrom Khaidarov died on the night of March 5th at a hospital for inmates of the Department of Corrections of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan in Tashkent, where he was receiving treatment.

The main diagnosis included ischemic heart disease, angina pectoris (functional class III), post-infarction cardiosclerosis, condition after coronary artery stenting operation, hypertensive disease of the III degree, arterial hypertension-III, danger-IV (very high).

The Special Prosecutor's Office of Tashkent has initiated pre-investigative actions. The press service of the ombudsman Feruza Eshmatova reported on the examination of this fact.

Bahrom Khaidarov, the former mayor of Andijan and the head of the Main Financial Management of the Andijan region (born in 1972), was convicted in December 2022 on charges of embezzlement, abuse of office, and money laundering from criminal activities.

Along with him, former prosecutor of Andijan, Kurbonali Askarov, chief accountant in the centralized financial and accounting service of Andijan, Saida Yulchieva, the first deputy head of the Main Financial Management of the regional administration, Farhod Mullajonov, former head of the revenue planning department of the local budget and budget formation of the main financial management of the regional administration, Shavkat Hashimov, and former head of the regional public education administration, Azizbek Mirkamilov, were sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

A total of 22 more individuals were sentenced, with several to corrective labor and restricted freedom. In total, there were 45 defendants in the case, accused of embezzling over 63 billion sums. "Gazeta.uz" had previously reported on the details of the case.
