Uzbekistan Holds 4477 Accountable for Domestic Violence in Q1 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, Uzbekistan's courts held 4477 individuals accountable for domestic violence offenses. The spokesperson for the Supreme Court, Aziz Abidov, announced that under Article 59-2 of the Administrative Responsibility Code, 4343 individuals faced consequences, with 2344 receiving fines and 1999 facing administrative arrest.

Moreover, 134 individuals were convicted under Article 126-1 of the Criminal Code for repeated or aggravated cases of domestic violence. Of these, 51 were sentenced to imprisonment, while 83 received non-custodial sentences.

These legal provisions were introduced in April 2023, resulting in 9131 individuals being held accountable under these articles in the previous year. The amendments, which underwent a year-long process involving representatives from ministries, non-governmental and international organizations, as well as civil activists like Nemolchi.uz, were extensively covered by "Gazeta.uz."

Article 59-2 of the Administrative Responsibility Code can lead to fines of up to 20 base calculation values or administrative arrest for up to 15 days, while Article 126-1 of the Criminal Code carries a maximum penalty of 12 years of imprisonment.

Previously, 318 individuals were found guilty of sexual harassment in the first quarter, with an additional 40 individuals convicted for the dissemination of intimate information.
