Astana School Scandal: Embezzlement Uncovered, Guilty Sentenced to 7 Years

The Prosecutor's Office of Astana has completed an inspection at one of the schools in the city and uncovered embezzlement of budget funds. Details of the investigation were announced by the press service of the agency.

According to the supervisory authority's report dated April 30, 2024, non-existent employees of the school had been receiving salaries and bonuses for seven years.

"During the investigation, the school staff fully admitted their guilt. By the court's verdict, the guilty individuals have been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment."

The press service of the Prosecutor's Office of Astana also stated that the convicted individuals have been ordered to compensate the financial damage caused to the state.

"The verdict has come into legal force," added the agency.

It was previously reported that the Anti-Corruption Service had completed an investigation into the former management of TOO "Karatau" (a subsidiary of AO "NAC "Kazatomprom"), the director of the subcontractor TOO "Iri Building", as well as representatives of the authorship and technical supervision. The contractor is suspected of embezzling 862 million tenge between 2019 and 2021, allocated for construction and installation works as part of the project to modernize the uranium processing plant at the Karatau mine in the Sozak district of the Turkestan region.
