Former diplomat Kadyr Yusupov, who was sentenced to 5.5 years in a general regime colony in January 2020 on charges of treason (Article 157 of the Criminal Code), was released on June 10 after serving his term. The term of serving the sentence was calculated from the day of detention - December 10, 2018.
Kadyr Yusupov is a former employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Over the years, he worked at the Uzbek embassies in Austria, the UK, Sudan, countries in the Middle East, as well as at the country's permanent representation to the UN and OSCE. In 2009, he returned from Vienna to Tashkent upon the completion of his official duties.
On December 3, 2018, the media reported about a 67-year-old man who fell on the subway tracks at the "Pushkinskaya" station in Tashkent. This man was Kadyr Yusupov. His family stated that it was a suicide attempt due to a complex psychological state.
The former diplomat was hospitalized with a fractured clavicle, closed head injury, and concussion. On the same day at the hospital, Kadyr Yusupov confessed to treason in favor of foreign countries. On December 10, he was detained, charged under Part 1 of Article 157 of the Criminal Code, and on December 12, a measure of restraint in the form of detention was chosen.
A military court began considering the case on June 24, 2019. Court hearings on the criminal case were held in closed sessions. Kadyr Yusupov did not admit his guilt.
