A tourist from Kazakhstan was detained on Saturday morning, June 22, by security service and registration desk employees when he carved the letters ALI on the light plaster in the House of the Ceii in the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Italy, as reported by a news source.
The tourist was reported to the carabinieri, and he will be questioned about any damage caused after the assessment of the plaster, according to Euronews.
Park director Gabriele Zuchtriegel stated that the tourist will have to pay for the restoration of the wall.
"Bravo to the ministry staff and Alesya, who promptly intervened. Excellent cooperation with the carabinieri, whom we thank for their promptness," Zuchtriegel added.
The House of the Ceii, excavated between 1913 and 1914, is one of the rare examples of ancient housing from the late Samnite period (2nd century BC). It is believed to have been the house of the magistrate Lucius Ceius Secundus.
