in Society / Kazakhstan - by

A representative of the Human Rights Ombudsman in the Turkestan region held a personal meeting with a resident of the Zhetysai district, a mother of five children who had been systematically subjected to domestic violence. The woman shared that she and her children suffered from domestic violence, were forced to huddle in one room, her husband did not allow her to use a bank card, spent all the money on alcohol, and forced the children to engage in theft. Currently, the woman and her children are accommodated in the crisis center "Kөmек".

Following the meeting, the Ombudsman's representative held a meeting with officials from the district and rural akimats, police, education, healthcare, employment, and social programs departments of the Zhetysai district. Specific instructions were given, urging them not to remain indifferent to the problems of those around them.

The negligence and lack of preventive measures by officials were identified as the cause of the situation faced by the large family. A representation has been sent to the competent authorities to consider disciplinary action against officials for the violations.

On February 21, 2024, the deputies of the Majilis approved in the first reading a bill proposing life imprisonment for pedophilia and child murder. These provisions are included in the draft law "On Amending Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Ensuring Women's Rights and Children's Safety."
