Kazakhstan to Increase Number of Female Police Officers to Combat Violence

in Society / Kazakhstan - by

Vice Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Lepeha revealed plans to increase the number of female police officers in Kazakhstan to address cases of violence against women and children. Currently, female officers are handling investigations related to such cases. The goal is to expand their ranks by 750 officers nationwide, as there are currently 280,000 female officers. This initiative aims to provide specialized support for female victims, with initial interrogations being conducted by women. Despite some government funding challenges, the experience has been positive and received support from local authorities.

In January 5, 2024, Kazakhstan announced the formation of specialized police units to combat domestic violence, primarily staffed by female law enforcement officers. On April 15, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law introducing amendments to enhance the protection of women's rights and children's safety. The new regulations aim to increase accountability for acts of violence against women and children, while strengthening family institutions and safeguarding minors. The exact financial details regarding these measures were not specified by the Vice Minister.
