Decline in Birth Rate in Kazakhstan for the Second Consecutive Year

The National Statistics Bureau of Kazakhstan released information today, April 22, 2024, regarding the birth rate in the country last year. According to the data, there has been a decrease in the birth rate for the second year in a row.

In 2023, a total of 388.4 thousand children were born in Kazakhstan, compared to 403.8 thousand in 2022. The gender distribution among the newborns was 51.6% boys and 48.4% girls. The overall birth rate coefficient in 2023 was 19.52 per 1000 people, down from 20.57 in 2022.

The regions with the highest birth rates were Mangystau (26.74 per 1000 people), Turkestan (26.18), and Shymkent (25.7). The total fertility rate in 2023 across the country was 2.96 children per woman of reproductive age (15-49 years), a decrease from 3.05 in 2022.

In urban areas, the fertility rate was 2.63 children per woman (2.76 in 2022), while in rural areas, it was 3.59 (unchanged from 2022). Notably, 23% of the newborns were second-born children, with 90.7 thousand children falling into this category. Additionally, over 1 thousand children were the eighth child in their families.

At the beginning of 2024, the National Statistics Bureau also revealed the most popular names chosen by Kazakhstani parents for newborns in 2023.
