Deputy of the Majilis Erlan Sairov Calls for Restrictions on TikTok for Minors

in Society / Kazakhstan - by

Erlan Sairov, a member of the Majilis, has proposed imposing restrictions on minors using TikTok. In his parliamentary inquiry to the Prime Minister, Sairov highlighted the negative impact of social media on children's health and psyche, particularly singling out TikTok. He expressed concerns over the platform promoting harmful content and influencing children towards negative habits and behaviors.

Citing the experiences of other countries, Sairov suggested implementing restrictions on TikTok in Kazakhstan to protect the younger generation. Countries like India, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and the US have already taken measures to regulate TikTok, with China even creating a separate version for minors.

Sairov emphasized the importance of nurturing future generations based on national values and safeguarding them from moral threats. He proposed measures such as restricting unlawful content on TikTok, blocking harmful content that could negatively influence children, and considering a special child-friendly format for the platform.

The discussion around TikTok's influence on minors is not limited to Kazakhstan, as Russia's Roskomnadzor is also considering a potential ban on the platform following a request from the Association of Professional Social Media Users and Messengers (APPSIM).
