Since January, 2137 violations related to harmful content dissemination have been identified in the Kazakhstani online space. These include pornography, drug propaganda, cults of cruelty, and violence. The Committee of Information of the Ministry of Culture and Information, represented by Meirlan Rakhonov, has sent 65 notifications to internet resource and social media administrations demanding the removal of the identified violations.
Measures have been taken to delete 1395 illegal materials, with restrictions imposed on 969 internet resources and links within Kazakhstan. Users can now report suspicious content on the Ministry of Culture and Information website under the "Report Internet Content" section. The ministry will investigate complaints and take action to block or remove the materials accordingly.
Furthermore, the ministry is collaborating with social media administrators to address illegal content. Meetings have been held with online platform owners to discuss new requirements for foreign platforms. Representatives from "VKontakte," Mail.ru, "Odnoklassniki," and the online platform TikTok have officially provided information.
In late March, ministry representatives will conduct an online meeting with Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. In July 2023, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law on online platforms and online advertising, prohibiting the dissemination of misinformation on online platforms and imposing requirements on platform owners for its removal.
