in Society / Kazakhstan - by

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the head of state, spoke on March 15, 2024, at the third session of the National Council, addressing the issue of bride kidnapping practices that contradict the ideals of a progressive society.

The President emphasized the importance of cultivating traditional family values firmly and consistently. He highlighted the need to address discrimination and oppression of women in families where Islamic canons are perceived in a distorted, dogmatic manner, leading to absurd restrictions conflicting with the spirit of the 21st century's scientific and technological advancements.

Tokayev condemned those who, under the guise of national traditions, attempt to enforce bride kidnapping practices. He stressed that such actions go against the values of a progressive society, where the dignity, rights, and freedoms of every individual are of absolute importance.

The President stated that such acts require not only moral condemnation but also legal evaluation. He called for combating religious extremism and archaism while adhering firmly to the canons of traditional Islam, a key pillar of national identity.

Tokayev emphasized the importance of embracing one's unique cultural code and understanding of the world. He previously stated that a truly civilized country cannot be built by dwelling solely on the past.
