Raiymbek Matraimov Remanded in Custody for Two Months

Raiymbek Matraimov has been remanded in custody for two months, as reported by the Pervomaisky District Court. The court granted the investigator's motion from the State National Security Committee. The measure of detention for the accused Raiymbek Matraimov has been extended until June 26, the court announced.

The State National Security Committee had previously informed about the detention of the four Matraimov brothers. On March 25, in cooperation with Azerbaijani special services in Baku, Raiymbek Matraimov, who was internationally wanted, was detained. His brothers Tilek, Ruslan, and Islambek were also apprehended.

On March 26, Raiymbek Matraimov was extradited from Baku to Bishkek. It was revealed that he was associated with the detained members of a transnational criminal group from Azerbaijan, who were planning an assassination on Kyrgyzstan's leadership, according to the State National Security Committee.

Raiymbek Matraimov is facing criminal charges under articles 169 "Illegal Deprivation of Liberty" and 222 "Money Laundering" of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan. On March 27, the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek placed Raiymbek Matraimov in pre-trial detention until April 26.

From 2015 to 2017, Raiymbek Matraimov held the position of Deputy Head of the State Customs Service. After a change in power in October 2020, he was accused of corruption at the customs. The total damage caused by Raiymbek Matraimov, in just one criminal case, amounted to 2 billion soms. He paid them off over two months, mostly in the form of property – a building and apartments. The former customs officer admitted his guilt. The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek fined him 260,000 soms.

On January 26, the State National Security Committee declared Raiymbek Matraimov wanted. It was reported that he may have left Kyrgyzstan for Turkey in the fall, and then to Dubai.
