Massive Drug Smuggling Operation Uncovered in Bishkek, 4 Tons Seized

Authorities in Bishkek discovered over 4 tons of poppy straw in one of the warehouses, as reported by the press service of the State Service for Drug Control of the Kyrgyz Republic (GUNB KR).

"Together with the customs department of 'Manas,' we have been working to uncover a transnational group that was laundering shadow money by organizing a sustainable channel for drug smuggling from neighboring and distant countries into Kyrgyzstan, with subsequent transit to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and China," the statement read.

According to the received information, officers searched a warehouse where they found large bags of poppy straw - over 4 tons. The results of the expertise showed that it contained around 350 kilograms of psychotropic substances (codeine and morphine).

The incident has been registered under two articles of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic: "Smuggling of goods subject to special rules for crossing the customs border of the Kyrgyz Republic" and "Illegal production of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and their analogs for the purpose of trafficking."

Two men have been detained and placed in pre-trial detention by the State Service for Drug Control of the Kyrgyz Republic.
