Authorities in Russia have foiled an attempt to illegally import contraband drugs containing potent substances from Kyrgyzstan. Russian media reports that the incident took place at the "Veseloyarsk" checkpoint as part of a joint operation between customs officers and border guards of the Russian Federal Security Service in the Altai region.
During a thorough inspection, law enforcement officers discovered 34 packages of medications hidden among consumer goods. The seized drugs were sent for analysis, revealing that they contained the banned substance sibutramine, weighing over 146 grams in total. Sibutramine is present in weight loss pills and is prohibited for circulation in Russia.
A criminal case has been initiated for smuggling potent substances, with offenders facing imprisonment ranging from three to seven years and a possible fine of up to 1 million rubles.
