NGOs and Activists Appeal to Kyrgyz President Against Controversial Law

in Society / Kyrgyzstan - by

Representatives of over 90 non-profit organizations and civil activists have sent an open letter to President Sadyr Japarov regarding the passing of the Law "On Amending the Law on NGOs".

The letter emphasizes the crucial role that NGOs play in addressing important societal issues in Kyrgyzstan. They are essential partners with governmental bodies in implementing various projects and programs, contributing to the development of the country.

The authors highlight the significance of international cooperation and financial support for the country from the international community. They stress that foreign aid plays a critical role in supporting the state budget and implementing major projects across various sectors.

NGOs in Kyrgyzstan are valued for their impartiality, compassion, and commitment to serving the needs of citizens and communities. They provide essential services in education, healthcare, social welfare, human rights, and environmental protection, contributing to the country's development and well-being.

The letter also addresses concerns about the proposed law that could restrict the activities of NGOs, particularly those funded by foreign sources. The restrictions could hinder their ability to protect citizens' rights, promote public interests, and provide social services to those in need.

In light of these challenges, NGOs urge President Japarov to veto the law on foreign agents, which could have a detrimental impact on the NGO sector in Kyrgyzstan.

On March 14, the Jogorku Kenesh passed the bill on "foreign agents" in its third reading, officially known as the Law on Amending the Law on NGOs.
