In an effort to reduce traffic congestion and prioritize road safety in the capital city, authorities in Bishkek have decided to implement "waffle" road markings at certain intersections on a pilot basis. The city's press service announced that the markings will serve as an additional measure to discipline drivers.
The new markings will help the city's surveillance cameras identify traffic situations more accurately, including instances of traffic obstruction at intersections. Vehicles are not allowed to block the passage of other road users for more than 5 seconds on the "waffle" markings, with penalties for violations.
Drivers are advised to calculate their speed and movement to avoid lingering on the markings and obstructing others. The city administration clarified that the "waffle" markings do not prohibit stopping entirely, with exceptions such as giving way to pedestrians or oncoming traffic while making a left turn at intersections.
The initial "waffle" markings have been applied at the intersection of Toktogul and Isanov streets, with plans to extend them to several other key intersections in the city. This initiative aims to enhance traffic discipline and safety, ultimately improving the overall flow of vehicles in Bishkek.
