Kyrgyz Parliament Member Advocates for International Science Olympiad Center

in Society / Kyrgyzstan - by

At a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, MP Eldar Abakirov proposed establishing a center in Kyrgyzstan for training students for international science Olympiads and allocating more funds for their preparation. Abakirov highlighted the success of Kyrgyz athletes in sports Olympiads due to adequate funding but emphasized the lack of attention to scientific Olympiads. He noted the disparity in medal achievements between Kyrgyzstan and other countries like Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. To incentivize participation, Abakirov suggested monetary rewards for winners, similar to other countries like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Currently, in Kyrgyzstan, only teachers receive monetary rewards for Olympiad preparation, which are rarely distributed. Abakirov stressed the need to expand Kyrgyzstan's participation in international Olympiads, currently limited to five out of fourteen subjects. He criticized the outdated and inefficient system of the national Olympiad organized by the private company "Somo," which receives 8 million soms annually from the state budget.

Abakirov proposed the establishment of a dedicated center for international Olympiad preparation, with a minimum annual budget of 50 million soms. Additionally, he suggested hosting an international Olympiad in Kyrgyzstan in 2029 for one subject, expecting 400-500 participants. Abakirov emphasized the importance of transitioning from the national to the international Olympiad system for better preparedness and competitiveness.
