in Society / Kyrgyzstan - by

The Chui Regional Court acquitted residents of Selektionnoye, Bakyt Balbaev and Baktybek Bekbolotov, as well as activist Erta Iskakov. This news was shared by human rights defender Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova on her Facebook page.

Initially, the Sokuluk District Court had sentenced Balbaev and Bekbolotov to 100 hours of community service. However, the prosecution later appealed this decision and requested a five-year imprisonment term.

On July 14, 2023, residents of Selektionnoye village blocked the Southern highway to protest against the lack of water supply since the beginning of summer. They had sought help from the head of the government, Akylbek Japarov, who promised to provide water within a week but failed to do so. Subsequently, three protesters were detained on July 15.
