Medical Staff Shortage in Issyk-Kul Region Raises Concerns

in Society / Kyrgyzstan - by

A shortage of medical personnel has been reported in the Issyk-Kul region, as stated by the head of the Independent Medical Union, Bermet Baryktabasova, on Facebook. According to her, all obstetrician-gynecologists in the Ak-Sui district have allegedly resigned, and the maternity hospital has been closed.

Furthermore, three obstetrician-gynecologists were also dismissed from the Karakol Regional Maternity Hospital. Doctors from the capital have been sent to fill in for months, while Bishkek doctors are under threat of dismissal if they refuse to work shifts in the region. Additionally, the reanimatologists of the regional maternity hospital have also resigned, according to Baryktabasova.

In other medical institutions, doctors of pension and pre-pension age are leaving voluntarily. Raisa Asylbasheva mentioned that besides the active gynecologists in the regional hospital's maternity department, obstetrician-gynecologists from the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, which is currently under renovation, and the Kyrgyz Scientific Center for Human Reproduction are working on a rotating schedule.

She noted that the number of births decreases slightly each year, and midwives have taken on a more significant role in handling physiological deliveries. Asylbasheva emphasized that all maternity hospitals are operational, and while there will be optimization and changes in the regionalization system, it cannot be said that one maternity hospital after another is closing in the Issyk-Kul region. The birthing process continues, and stopping it is impossible.
