in Politics / Tajikistan - by

President Emomali Rahmon sent a congratulatory telegram to the new Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif, expressing his warm wishes on his election to the high post. The message highlighted the long-standing traditions, friendly relations, mutual understanding, respect, and trust between Tajikistan and Pakistan.

The President expressed satisfaction in the continuous development and enrichment of the multifaceted cooperation between the two countries based on these positive traditions. He emphasized Tajikistan's keen interest in continuing interstate dialogue, interaction, and coordination with Pakistan to further strengthen and expand the long-term partnership for the benefit of both nations.

Shahbaz Sharif was elected as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan on Sunday, March 3, after the country's newly formed parliament voted in his favor. He secured 201 votes, surpassing the required 169 votes, defeating Omar Ayub, who received 92 votes. Shahbaz Sharif, the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, returned to his duties after the parliament was dissolved before elections and a temporary government took office.

The elections in Pakistan were held in a tense atmosphere, with disruptions in mobile and internet services on the election day. No party won a majority of votes to form a cabinet. The delayed announcement of results led to criticism and accusations of electoral fraud.

The main contenders, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, both former Prime Ministers, have faced corruption charges and served time in prison. Imran Khan is currently serving a 31-year sentence for corruption, disclosure of state secrets, and an allegedly invalid marriage.

Analysts anticipate challenges for the new government in addressing the numerous issues facing Pakistan, including the lingering impact of the devastating floods in 2022 and the complex economic situation in the country.
