The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan strongly condemns the recent airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, which resulted in casualties. The Ministry's statement deems such actions as a violation of international law, specifically the Vienna Conventions.
On the evening of April 1st, the Israeli Air Force targeted the Mezzeh district in western Damascus. Among the casualties were two senior generals of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) - Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Hajji Rahimi. Both generals were veterans of the Iran-Iraq war and senior military advisors in Syria.
Zahedi commanded the elite "Quds Force" special operations units, responsible for their actions in Syria and Lebanon, as well as liaising with Hezbollah. Rahimi served as his deputy. Zahedi was reportedly involved in terrorist operations against Israel.
The incident is described as the most significant loss for the IRGC since the death of General Qasem Soleimani in Iraq in 2020. Syrian state media reported that the building was completely destroyed, with all inside killed. Syria and Iran have blamed Israel for the attack, with Iran's Foreign Ministry labeling it a violation of international conventions and reserving the right to retaliate.
The situation remains tense as Iran contemplates its response to what it perceives as aggression. The repercussions of this airstrike could have wider implications for the region, as tensions between these nations continue to escalate.
