The UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Lord David Cameron, visited Nurek in Tajikistan following talks with the country's leadership, including a visit to the Nurek Hydro Power Plant. He was accompanied by the country's Deputy Prime Minister Usmonali Usmonzoda and the head of Barki Tojik, Mahmudumar Asozoda. The guest was greeted with dances and songs.
During the meeting, Cameron praised Tajikistan's energy potential in producing environmentally friendly electricity. "We are considering the possibility of creating an investment fund to support small businesses," he told journalists. "It is also possible to establish a separate fund for green investments. We are also interested in promoting the study of the English language in Tajikistan and Central Asian countries. We want projects like CASA 1000 to expand, which can help in transmitting electricity from Central Asia to South Asia."
Tajikistan and the UK established diplomatic relations on January 15, 1992, marking the first visit of a British Foreign Minister to Tajikistan.
