in National Security / Uzbekistan - by

Social media erupted on March 27th with news of Turkish law enforcement detaining 70 individuals suspected of belonging to the international terrorist group ISIS. Among those detained was a 39-year-old Uzbek citizen from Andijan region.

Following legal intervention, the claims of the Uzbek national's involvement with ISIS were disproven, leading to his release. The Uzbek Consulate in Istanbul issued recommendations for Uzbek citizens in Turkey to avoid falling into the trap of extremist ideologies.

The recommendations include refraining from engaging with extremist content on platforms like Telegram, Instagram, Tik-Tok, YouTube, and WhatsApp, as well as avoiding storing or sharing religious materials and not responding to religious invitations from unknown sources via email.

In January, Uzbekistan's Committee on Religious Affairs published an updated list of materials deemed by the Supreme Court to contain extremist and terrorist ideas. The committee urged the public not to distribute materials from the listed websites and channels, and to refrain from liking such content.
