The regional representative of the ombudsman in Karakalpakstan conducted a monitoring visit to prison No. 27. Accompanied by representatives from the National Agency for Social Protection under the President of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Health of Karakalpakstan, they inspected the living conditions of the inmates, including showers, medical facilities, the kitchen, food storage areas, work conditions, and spaces for long visits. Recommendations were provided to address the identified shortcomings.
The ombudsman's regional representative engaged in individual conversations with the inmates, listened to their opinions on the institution's conditions, and heard their grievances.
All inmates in the facility underwent medical examinations by a team of 10 doctors using ultrasound, ECG, and X-ray equipment. As a result, 47 of them were diagnosed with "osteomyelitis" and "osteoarthritis," requiring hospitalization and surgery. Additionally, 15 convicts received medications as per the doctors' recommendations. The cardiology department of the clinic has scheduled outpatient and inpatient treatment for 20 individuals, with glasses provided to 4 inmates based on medical advice.
Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory condition of the bone tissue caused by infection penetration, often through trauma or surgery. Osteochondrosis, on the other hand, involves the degeneration of bones and joint cartilage in the musculoskeletal system, commonly affecting the spine. The recent findings shed light on the health challenges faced by inmates in the region and the necessary medical interventions being undertaken to address them.
