Abdullokh Ruziev, a young translator from Andijan, is making waves in the literary world. While pursuing his master's degree at Andijan State Institute of Foreign Languages, he also teaches English to children in the village of Zankent. His passion for prose blossomed during his university years, particularly when he delved into English literature.
Introduced to the works of Uzbek writer Utkir Hashimov at a young age, Ruziev was captivated by "Such Is Life," a collection of stories depicting post-war Tashkent through the lens of the author's mother. Despite initially not fully grasping the significance of the book, Ruziev revisited it years later and found a deep connection to his own upbringing.
In 2016, Ruziev embarked on translating Hashimov's stories into English, a project he completed by 2018. Seeking approval from the author's descendants, he traveled to Tashkent and connected with Hashimov's family, ultimately gaining their blessing for the translation. This journey led him to collaborate with translator Mark Riz, who refined the English version while preserving the essence of Hashimov's original work.
The collaboration between Ruziev and Riz spanned three years, as they meticulously worked to convey Hashimov's emotive storytelling and complex characters. Their dedication to maintaining the authenticity of the Uzbek literature in English showcases a deep respect for the cultural heritage embedded in Hashimov's works.
With financial support from United Cement Group (UCG), Riz facilitated the publication of the English translation, allowing a wider audience to appreciate Hashimov's narratives. The translation of "Such Is Life" is now available in hardcover on Amazon, reaching a global readership thanks to the efforts of Ruziev and Riz.
