Court Upholds Arrests of Journalists from Temirov Live in Kyrgyzstan

The Judicial Collegium of the Bishkek City Court has rejected the appeals of Tynystan Asypbekov, Maxat Tazhibek uulu, and Azamat Ishenbekov. The rulings of the Pervomaysky District Court from March 12 remain unchanged for them.

Earlier, the court extended the detention period until May 13 for eight detained journalists - Mahabat Tazhibek kyzy, Aike Beishekeeva, Aktilek Kaparov, Joodar Buzumov, Azamat Ishenbekov, Saipidin Sultanaliyev, Maxat Tazhibek uulu, and Tynystan Asypbekov.

On January 16, the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted a search at the Temirov Live office, seizing editorial equipment. The police searched homes and detained 11 current and former employees of the publication.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, following a "judicial-linguistic examination" of content on the pages of Temirov Live and "Ait Ait Dese" on social networks on December 30, 2023, a criminal case was initiated under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan for "Incitement to Mass Disorders."

Those detained include Mahabat Tazhibek kyzy, Sapar Akunbekov, Azamat Ishenbekov, Saipidin Sultanaliyev, Aktilek Kaparov, Tynystan Asypbekov, Maxat Tazhibek uulu, Joodar Buzumov, Zhumabek Turdaliyev, Aike Beishekeeva, and Akyl Orozbekov. All of them are former or current employees of Temirov Live.

All 11 detained journalists were remanded in custody for two months until March 13. They were held in pre-trial detention centers for almost two weeks without being transferred to a remand prison.
