In Kyrgyzstan, a long-awaited law on biological safety is set to be introduced. This announcement was made by MP Alisher Erbaev during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on agricultural policy, water resources, ecology, and regional development.
The committee members reviewed the draft law "On Biological Safety in the Kyrgyz Republic," which was developed by deputy Dinara Ashimova.
MP Balbak Tulobaev expressed outrage that the document should have been developed by relevant agencies such as the Ministry of Nature or the Ministry of Agriculture, rather than a lawmaker with a legal background.
However, officials from the respective ministries explained that they had concurrently formed their own commission to work on the law alongside the deputy. Eventually, they combined efforts and jointly developed the draft law.
After brief discussions, the committee members unanimously supported the concept of the document.
It is worth noting that Russia is prepared to finance the establishment of a modern laboratory in Kyrgyzstan for the advancement of biosecurity. The laboratory will have specialized capabilities. The construction is planned as part of a memorandum of understanding on biological safety issues, signed during the visit of President Vladimir Putin to our country in October 2023.
