Astana Residents Jailed for Terrorism: Sentences Range from 7 to 20 Years

Eight residents of Astana have been sentenced to imprisonment for a period ranging from seven to 20 years for engaging in terrorist activities.

According to the city prosecutor's office, the members of the terrorist group were discussing relocating to the conflict zone in Syria and the need to establish a theocratic form of government in Kazakhstan.

"The leader of this group organized the financing of a terrorist organization that was carrying out military operations in Syria. The guilt of the convicted individuals has been fully proven by the state prosecutor. The prosecutor's office of Astana warns citizens against visiting places and websites that promote radical ideas in Islam," the statement said.

The verdict has come into legal force.

Earlier, political analysts commented on the strengthening of measures against the main threat in the world - terrorism.
