Kyrgyzstan Declares War on Drug Trafficking to Protect Youth

in National Security / Kyrgyzstan - by

The situation with drugs has become a massive issue in Kyrgyzstan, as stated by the head of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB), Kamchybek Tashiev. He emphasized the need to launch a ruthless battle against drug trafficking and those involved in the distribution and use of narcotics. Tashiev highlighted the growing number of individuals, especially among the youth in schools and universities, spreading and consuming synthetic drugs.

The shift from traditional drug cultivation to the use of synthetic substances has led to an increase in clandestine laboratories producing these narcotics. The distribution has evolved from person-to-person transactions to online platforms and other modern technologies, making it harder to track down drug traffickers. Tashiev warned that the drug trade has now escalated to a significant threat at a national level, with the primary goal being to safeguard the health of the youth for them to serve the country in the future.

Addressing the potential consequences of the current drug situation, Tashiev stressed the urgent need for all law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts against drug distributors. He called for strict monitoring of schools, universities, establishments, nightclubs, cafes, and restaurants. The police, prosecutor's office, and GKNB were urged to take special control measures as mandated by the state leadership. The President's concern lies in the well-being of the younger generation and the future challenges they may face.

Tashiev acknowledged the alarming trend of some corrupt law enforcement officials colluding with the drug trade. Over the past 1.5 years, 12 employees from security agencies have been arrested for drug-related crimes, aiding in drug distribution and providing protection to drug lords. The commitment to eradicate drug trafficking and protect the youth remains a top priority for Kyrgyzstan's authorities.
