Tajikistan's Great Patriotic War Veterans: Numbers, Milestones, and Remembrance Efforts

In Tajikistan today, on April 29, 2024, there are 25 participants of the Great Patriotic War left. This was reported by the Council of War and Labor Veterans of the Republic.

According to the Council's data, last year there were 43 veterans, although the media reported 37.

In 2005, Tajikistan had 9,900 World War II veterans, in 2020 - 168, in 2021 - 98, in 2022 - 59 participants. The Council stated, "Over 19 years, 9,875 veterans of the Great Patriotic War have passed away."

The oldest participant of the Great Patriotic War, Rashid Karimov, residing in the village of Shokhambari in the Hissar district, will turn 112 years old this year - he was born on May 9, 1912.

Dushanbe resident Khalim Khaidarov will be 105 years old this year. Aziz Kodirov from Shakhrinav will celebrate his 102nd birthday this year.

Dushanbe resident Mukhtor Zargarov turned 100 years old today, April 29, and Gulmurod Tagoyev from the Abdurakhmon Jam district will celebrate his centenary on May 1.

It is worth noting that around 300,000 people from Tajikistan fought on the fronts of World War II, with 92,000 people perishing or going missing.

Furthermore, the Council of War and Labor Veterans of Tajikistan includes 290 rear veterans on its lists.

Every year on May 9 and June 22, Tajikistan remembers and honors the heroes of the Great Patriotic War who went to the front in 1941.
