The Parliament of Tajikistan has approved two important military agreements with Turkey, allowing for the purchase of weapons, including drones, and the training of Tajik soldiers in Turkish military training centers. These two agreements were ratified by Tajikistan's parliament on April 11.
The first agreement on military-technical cooperation between the two countries was signed on July 26, 2023, in Istanbul by the defense ministers of both states. Tajikistan's Defense Minister Sherali Mirzo explained that Turkey will allocate 50 million Turkish lira ($1.5 million) for Tajikistan to purchase weapons, drones, and modern equipment from Turkish defense companies.
The implementation of this agreement is crucial amid the increasing modern threats and the rise of international terrorism and extremism. The cooperation aims to enhance military-technical collaboration with Turkey, including acquiring combat weapons, drones, and more.
The second agreement, also approved by Tajikistan's parliament, involves Turkey allocating 2 million lira ($62,000) for the training of Tajik military personnel. This funding will cover expenses related to organizing training and education for Tajik soldiers in Turkish educational institutions, as well as visits of Turkish military personnel to Tajikistan.
This agreement opens up opportunities for Tajik military personnel to receive professional training in Turkey, in addition to their current training programs in Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and India. Tajikistan's collaboration with Turkey in the military sphere signifies a step towards strengthening defense capabilities and fostering bilateral relations.
