On May 8, a meeting took place between representatives of the border, law enforcement, and security forces of the Sughd Region of Tajikistan and the Batken Region of Kyrgyzstan.
The meeting was held in accordance with the instructions of the head of Sughd, Rajabbоy Ahmadzoda, and the Authorized Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic for the Batken Region, Abdikarim Alimbayev, with the participation of the chairmen of the J. Rasulov District of Sughd Region and the Leilek District of Batken Region.
According to the press service of the Sughd Regional Administration, the parties discussed the common causes of the incident between citizens and border patrols of both sides, the behavior of local residents living near the border who are engaged in livestock grazing, and ways to prevent border incidents along the Tajik-Kyrgyz border.
No further details of the meeting have been disclosed.
It is worth noting that on Tuesday, May 7, an incident occurred on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border, resulting in one Tajik citizen sustaining a gunshot wound.
Both Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan reported the incident, however, they have different versions of what transpired. This meeting was convened to clarify the situation.
This is the first incident involving the use of weapons on the border between the two countries in the last two years. The last armed conflict occurred in September 2022, resulting in the deaths of 41 Tajik citizens and 63 Kyrgyz citizens, according to official data.
Subsequently, the parties held several meetings and negotiations, including at the highest level, effectively putting an end to the conflicts. The joint intergovernmental commission on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border began to hold more frequent sessions and to coordinate sections of the disputed border line.
The total length of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border is 972 kilometers.
