in National Security / Tajikistan - by

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan, Ramazon Rahimzoda, met with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Tajikistan, Nikolaas Schermers, on May 1st to discuss cooperation in the areas of investigation, apprehension, and extradition of criminals between the two countries.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan, particular attention was given to the issues of apprehension and extradition of individuals wanted by Tajikistan. Both parties expressed readiness to enhance cooperation in combating terrorism, extremism, transnational organized crime, illicit drug trafficking, as well as in exchanging information and assisting in strengthening peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Earlier, on April 23rd, the extradition of criminals was discussed by Ramazon Rahimzoda with his Italian counterpart, Matteo Piantedosi. The Tajik side expressed concern that some criminals are granted asylum in Europe, including Italy.

"Collaboration between the law enforcement agencies of both countries can contribute to holding these individuals accountable," Rahimzoda stated during the meeting.

In 2023, there were several cases of extradition of Tajik citizens, including from European countries. Tajik authorities claim that the extradition and punishment of these individuals are justified as there is evidence of their criminal activities.

According to the Prosecutor General's Office of Tajikistan, in 2023, over 200 criminals were arrested and extradited at the request of the country, which is 100 more than the previous year. Prosecutor General Yusuf Rahmon stated that the extradited individuals have been prosecuted for various crimes.
