in Corruption / Kazakhstan - by

In the Satpayev City Court, the trial of the former mayor of Satpayev, Shapagat Aubakir, and a private entrepreneur who bribed him has concluded. It was revealed that while serving as mayor, Aubakir accepted a bribe from a local businessman involved in road maintenance in the city. The ex-mayor promised to assist the businessman in increasing government procurement contracts in exchange for a bribe of 10 million tenge.

Both defendants pleaded guilty and requested a more lenient punishment. Despite their pleas, Aubakir was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, with a lifetime ban on holding public office. The businessman was fined 200 million tenge, twenty times the amount of the bribe, and also banned from public office.

Additionally, a separate ruling was issued against the city administration of Satpayev, requiring an investigation into the funding plan and targeted use of allocated budgetary funds. It is important to note that the verdict is not yet final. Earlier this year, Aubakir was arrested by Anti-Corruption officials on February 14th.
