Kazakhstan Prosecution Continues Investigations on Former Police Officials

The General Prosecutor's Office has addressed the dissemination of information in various Telegram channels regarding the criminal prosecution of former Minister of Internal Affairs Erlan Turgumbaev and other police officials. Investigations are ongoing concerning the failure to maintain law and order during the January events and the use of torture on citizens. Several regional police and national security officials have been convicted for these crimes. Former Minister Turgumbaev has been questioned as part of the investigations. 

Evidence has been gathered on torture cases in a detention center in Karasai district, leading to the arrest of former officials. Moreover, investigations are ongoing regarding the embezzlement of firearms by former police management in Taldykorgan. The General Prosecutor's Office has assured that further details will be disclosed in due time, respecting the interests of the investigation and the rights of citizens. News surfaced on March 19, 2024, in Telegram channels about a criminal case opened against former Minister of Internal Affairs Erlan Turgumbaev for alleged abuses of power. However, the current Minister Erzhan Sadenov denied any knowledge of such a case during a parliamentary session on March 20.
