Former Deputy Mayor of Shymkent Faces Bribery Charges in High-Profile Court Case

in Corruption / Kazakhstan - by

In the specialized interdistrict criminal court, the case of the former deputy mayor of Shymkent, Maksut Isakhov, is being reviewed. He is accused of giving a bribe to the first deputy director of the city's DNKB.

The resonant legal process began with the prosecutor's speech. According to the state prosecutor, Isakhov's case dates back to May 2020 when a tender was announced for the reconstruction of the main networks of three streets in Shymkent. The winner was determined to be TOO "Corporation "City-Construction". The potential supplier who came second was TOO "AlemStroi-1". However, the losing company, "START-STROY", was not satisfied with the tender results and turned to the court.

The specialized interdistrict economic court's decision on June 2, 2020, fully satisfied the lawsuit filed by TOO "START-STROY". Isakhov, despite not having any relation to the mentioned tender due to his official duties, demanded money from the company for his alleged obligations. Subsequently, Isakhov was charged with "Abuse of Power" and later with "Bribery on an Especially Large Scale".

Isakhov denied all accusations in court, claiming that he was actually being extorted by the first deputy director of the KNB. A hearing on the case is scheduled for March 19. In a recent development, Isakhov's defense team requested a change in his detention conditions, citing his poor health, but the request was denied.

Isakhov, who held the position of deputy mayor of Shymkent since February 2020, was arrested on July 20, 2023. The former official, born on January 23, 1974, in the Shardarinsky district of the Turkestan region, faces serious legal consequences as the trial progresses.
