in Corruption / Kazakhstan - by

On April 2, 2024, in court No. 2 of Pavlodar, a criminal case was reviewed against the director of the Pavlodar regional branch of the National Company "KazAvtoZhol" and the chief specialist. They were accused of receiving a large bribe through extortion.

It was established in court that on June 29, 2023, the director of the branch, along with an accomplice - the company's chief specialist, threatening not to sign acts of completed work and terminate the contract for state purchases for servicing the highway Pavlodar - Astana, received a bribe of 4 million tenge from a subcontractor.

The branch director was also accused of abusing his official powers. The prosecutor requested eight years of imprisonment for him and seven years for the accomplice.

The defendants did not fully admit guilt and requested acquittal. Considering mitigating circumstances and the fact that they have minor children dependent on them, the court sentenced A. M. to eight years in prison and Ө. Z. to seven years. A. M. was acquitted of the abuse of official powers due to lack of evidence of involvement in the crime, as reported by the press service of court No. 2 in Pavlodar on April 2.

The verdict has not yet entered into legal force. In January 2024, Anticor reported a criminal case against the deputy director of the KazAvtoZhol branch in the Zhambyl region.
