Controversy Surrounding Missing Dam Worth 2.2 Billion Tenge in Turkestan Region

in Corruption / Kazakhstan - by

The executive director of the Republican Public Association "Adildik Zholy," Didar Smagulov, was unable to locate a dam in the Turkestan region that allegedly cost 2.2 billion tenge at the end of 2021. Local authorities have responded to this issue.

Smagulov visited the site where the dam worth 2.2 billion tenge was supposed to be but could not find it. The public figure shared this information on Facebook on April 18, 2024.

According to Smagulov, many surprised journalists contacted him when "Adildik Zholy" announced that 97 billion tenge had been spent over two years on various dams, dykes, and shore reinforcements.

The construction of a complex of activities on the Shoshkakol Lake system was implemented in 2020-2021. The cost of construction and installation work amounted to 2.1 billion tenge. The project was completed and put into operation in December 2021.

The Shoshkakol Lake system has been functioning since the facility was put into operation. In this water area, 275 million cubic meters of water were collected in 2022, 355 million cubic meters in 2023, and as of April 15, 2024, 455 million cubic meters have been collected. To date, no dam erosion has been recorded.

The Shoshkakol Lake system consists of lakes and swamps ending in a saline depression, with the river Bugun flowing there. The total area of the lake system's water area is over 30 thousand hectares, with lakes occupying about 15 thousand hectares. During spring floods, water spreads across the entire territory, flooding vast areas with a layer of water from 50 to 100 cm. By summer, due to evaporation and filtration, the area dries up quickly, leaving water only in certain lakes. The total capacity of the lake system is approximately 500 million cubic meters of water.

Earlier, Kazhydromet named regions where water levels in rivers are expected to rise in the coming days.
